Redefining Funk

Funk in the past has had a bad connotation (i.e. I’m in a funk), but at Botanist & Barrel we live for the funk.  Funk has a history of being a catch all descriptor for flaws, so we wanted to share what it means to us.  And why it’s a beautiful thing! 

It is a fine line between perfection and imperfection.  Beauty is balance and without funk and umami in our lives, the world of flavors would be muted.  As Aristotle said, “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts,” and funk is essential for a colorful palate. 

We want to redefine and shift the meaning.  So here are the NEW FUNK definitions:

Funk (funky) (adjective); expressive of terroir, harmonious umami. having all the things.or hitting all the right notes.

Funk (noun); microbial terroir, microbial life. 

Use it in a sentence you say!  

Funky cider is delicious cider.

This cider has amazing barnyard funk.  It brings all the animals to the yard.

Funk helps us to never stop learning about the beauty of fermentation.  

Hip Hop artists Notorious B.I.G. says it best is his song Machine Gun Funk

“It's type simple and plain to maintain 

I add a little funk to the brain

The funk baby

(I live for the funk, I'll die for the funk)”
